Participant’s impressions from GSERM Ljubljana 2018
“I joined GSERM in Ljubljana to deepen my understanding of statistical models, particularly in mediation and moderation processes. It was particularly helpful to cover such a topic in detail in the course of a couple of days, with a variety of applications and “practical” parts. The social events were a great opportunity to meet other participants. It was enriching to talk about research from many different fields outside of my own field (marketing), an opportunity I do not have very often. Besides, I must mention: the food, e.g., at the welcome dinner, was another highlight. Ljubljana is a wonderful city and an ideal place for such an academic summer escape. Throughout my stay, people were friendly and helpful – Thank you for this experience!”
Robin Ruhnau, PhD candidate and research assistant at the University of Mannheim, Germany
“GSERM Ljubljana was definitely a very positive experience. The lecturers excel in both teaching and researching so it is a great privilege to attend the courses. In addition, the students tend to originate from very distinct backgrounds, which is a great way to step out of your own academic bubble and see what sort of problems people in other fields face and how they handle them. The staff makes it an even greater experience because they are very committed to sharing the Slovenian culture with the participants and help us make the best out of this incredible city.”
Filipe Sengo Furtado, Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU)
“I have had a wonderful experience in the past week here. The classes were well structured and conducted at an easy pace. Prof. Mihas is extremely knowledgeable, engaging and responsive to questions. The classes were interactive and we had interesting discussions. I appreciate the thought and effort that went into organising GSERM courses and the social events. I am so impressed! We received timely information about the courses, travel and accommodation prior to our arrival. The dinners at the castle and the traditional restaurant were absolutely splendid! I especially liked the printed group photograph that we received at the farewell dinner as a memento of our time spent here. Ljubljana surprised me with its vibrant, lively culture. The social events were great to get to know other students and to explore not just Ljubljana but also other parts of Slovenia. I wish this was a two-week course since I would have loved to learn more and spend some additional time here!
The conversations with other participants both in and outside the classroom is something I will always carry with me. The value of this program is in the exchange between students from diverse research and cultural backgrounds which challenges your own thinking and makes for a more enriching learning experience.
I think the summer school is also a great way to meet other researchers in a more relaxed learning atmosphere. That the courses offered by GSERM are given by experts in their respective fields is a big plus. I definitely recommend this program to early stage researchers looking for high quality courses in an amazing location.”

“Having attended the GSERM programme in Oslo in January, I was super excited for taking the machine learning class in Ljubljana. My high expectations were exceeded. Not only the academics, but also the cultural experiences were one-of-a-kind!”
Jochen Hartmann, PhD Marketing, Hamburg University
“I very much enjoyed the QCA course from Summer School GSERM Ljubljana. I work for a research project focusing on governance in China and we plan to apply QCA to our research. GSERM Ljubljana Summer School was a perfect opportunity both to develop my knowledge about the method and the ways to apply it to my topic and to meet great people from all over the world and from very diverse fields of study. I would like to once again say thank you to Prof. Charles Ragin and course organizers!”
Elizaveta Priupolina, Ph.D. candidate and Research Associate, DFG Project NO 1041/2-1, IN-EAST Institute of East Asian Studies, University of Duisburg-Essen
“I want to thank the GSERM team for a great organization of the summer school GSERM Ljubljana. I learned more than I was expecting, and at the same time had a great time meeting other participants and profiting from beautiful Ljubljana.”
