Participant’s impressions from GSERM Ljubljana
“Thank you! This was a very useful and educational course for me at the stage I am now. The lecturer had a very good program where he got us involved in groups, at the same time both his presentations and his way of presenting the topics were very educational. I will recommend it to all PhD students I meet on my way.”

“Several colleagues recommended the GSERM courses as they had already attended in the past and their experience with the organization was very positive in all of the cities offered, including Ljubljana. They praised the high level of academic rigor, competence of lecturers, variety of topics, affordability and organization and last, but not least, the locations! I learned a great deal not only in the course, but also outside of it. I had a chance to compare how other PhD students work, what are their problems and research, and how do they deal with them.”

“I was really interested in the topics announced in the school program. Firstly, the study of these topics should have been useful for me, as for teachers of econometrics at our university. Secondly, the course program was supposed to help me master some of the machine learning methods that I plan to use in my current research work. And, of course, one of the most motivating goals was the opportunity to meet a lot of interesting and smart people whose interests are similar to mine. The pace in the classroom was pretty fast, but comfortable. In just a week, we managed to cover several large sections of econometrics and machine learning.”
Daria Teterina, National Research University Higher School of Economics, Russia (participated in 2019)
“I have had a wonderful experience in the past week here. The classes were well structured and conducted at an easy pace. Prof. Mihas is extremely knowledgeable, engaging and responsive to questions. The classes were interactive and we had interesting discussions. I appreciate the thought and effort that went into organising GSERM courses and the social events. I am so impressed! We received timely information about the courses, travel and accommodation prior to our arrival. The dinners at the castle and the traditional restaurant were absolutely splendid! I especially liked the printed group photograph that we received at the farewell dinner as a memento of our time spent here. Ljubljana surprised me with its vibrant, lively culture. The social events were great to get to know other students and to explore not just Ljubljana but also other parts of Slovenia. I wish this was a two-week course since I would have loved to learn more and spend some additional time here!
The conversations with other participants both in and outside the classroom is something I will always carry with me. The value of this program is in the exchange between students from diverse research and cultural backgrounds which challenges your own thinking and makes for a more enriching learning experience.
I think the summer school is also a great way to meet other researchers in a more relaxed learning atmosphere. That the courses offered by GSERM are given by experts in their respective fields is a big plus. I definitely recommend this program to early stage researchers looking for high quality courses in an amazing location.”
